Not only because there is starting to get bloat, but there are better non-Linux distros out there (Freebsd ).

Look at /etc/inittab. This is were you set your system run level. A run level of 5 starts you out in X. Set this in inittab:
id:3:initdefault:

That will start you out in run level 3, which is multi-user, networking w/o X. Then you can do the normal startx that you are probably used to.

Note that this has worked in versions of Redhat that I’ve used back to 4.2. I haven’t ran 8.0 yet, so let me know if it works
