{"id":10000,"date":"2014-12-31T08:24:35","date_gmt":"2014-12-31T16:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=10000"},"modified":"2018-12-31T18:11:32","modified_gmt":"2019-01-01T02:11:32","slug":"the-adventures-of-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/2014\/12\/the-adventures-of-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"The adventures of 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a great year in <a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=8915\">2013<\/a>, highlighted by getting married to MJ and starting a new job that I continue to be really happy with. 2014 ended up being characterized by how much travel I&#8217;ve done, and a side trip down having the first surgery of my life.<\/p>\n<p>Travel-wise I broke the 100k in-flight miles barrier, with a total of 101,170 in air miles. I traveled at least once a month and was able to add Australia to my continents list this year. The beaches in Perth were beautiful, and with January in the middle of their summer, it was certainly beach weather when I went!<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/012014\/perth_cottesloe_beach_towel.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/012014\/perth_cottesloe_beach_towel_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Visiting family didn&#8217;t take a back seat this year, I spent a week up in Maine staying with my sister Annette, my nephew Xavier and visiting with my mother and her kitties. Plus, got a nice dose of snow along with it! Very enjoyable when I&#8217;m in a warm home and don&#8217;t have to drive.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/032014\/beth_xavier_morning.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/032014\/beth_xavier_morning_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I also was able to stick family visits onto a couple Florida trips and we went to the weddings of MJ&#8217;s cousin and sister in the fall. wasn&#8217;t all <em>traveling<\/em> to conferences, I did HP booth duty at the Open Business Conference in May (<a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=9384\">wrap-up post<\/a>) and presented at PuppetConf in September (<a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=9812\">wrap-up post<\/a>), both here in San Francisco. I also did some personal conference geekery with my friend Danita Fries by attending Google I\/O for the first time in June (<a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=9537\">wrap-up post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I also gave a number of talks, sometimes double or tripling up during a conference. Working with Matthew Helmke and Jos\u00c3\u00a9 Antonio Rey, the <u>Official Ubuntu Book, 8th Edition<\/u> was released in July.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.informit.com\/store\/official-ubuntu-book-9780133905397\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/072014\/Official_Ubuntu_Book_8th_Edition_tn.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The Official Ubuntu Book, 8th Edition, July 2014<\/small><\/div>\n<p>2014 also made me one organ lighter as of July with the <a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=9641\">removal of my gallbladder<\/a> after a few months of diagnostics and pain. It certainly complicated some of my travel, making me spend the shortest amount of time possible in both Croatia and Germany, both countries I wish I could have explored more during my trips.<\/p>\n<p>So far for 2015 I believe I&#8217;ll have a slightly less busy year travel-wise, but my first two trips are international, the first to Brussels for my first <a href=\"https:\/\/fosdem.org\/2015\/\">FOSDEM<\/a> and then in February off to Oman for <a href=\"http:\/\/fossc.om\/2015\/\">FOSSC Oman<\/a>.
