{"id":2038,"date":"2009-09-20T21:21:31","date_gmt":"2009-09-21T02:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/?p=2038"},"modified":"2009-09-20T21:21:31","modified_gmt":"2009-09-21T02:21:31","slug":"philadelphia-software-freedom-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/princessleia.com\/journal\/2009\/09\/philadelphia-software-freedom-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Software Freedom Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the <a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntupennsylvania.org\/\">Ubuntu Pennsylvania Team<\/a> hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/PennsylvaniaTeam\/EventsTeam\/PhillySFD2009\">a Software Freedom Day<\/a> event.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the <a href=\"http:\/\/pacsnet.org\/\">Philadelphia Area Computer Society<\/a>&#8216;s meeting space in the community center of Giant grocery store in Willow Grove around 8:30AM and spent the morning in the lobby with several computers. We answered questions and chatted with folks coming through about everything from the LTSP systems we had set up, to documentation formats, to Ubuntu on netbooks.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/crissi_lyz_sfd_2009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/crissi_lyz_sfd_2009_sm.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><center><small>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/ahotw.com\/\">Andrew Keyes<\/a> for this photo<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>One of the great things about hosting an event above a grocery store is easy access to all kinds of supplies &#8211; including helium for balloons! Crissi (our latest Kubuntu convert!) and I took a dozen <a href=\"http:\/\/softwarefreedomday.org\/\">Software Freedom Day<\/a> balloons downstairs to be filled for the event.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/josh_on_ltsp_sfd_2009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/josh_on_ltsp_sfd_2009_sm.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jedijf.blogspot.com\/\">Jim Fisher<\/a> has been working hard on some LTSP deployments for an upcoming project, in the picture above our young tester Josh is playing a game. In the course of testing these LTSP servers we even found an LTSP+Open Office bug! Later in the day Jim also gave me a demo of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.partimage.org\/\">partimage<\/a> on his laptop, which we&#8217;re hoping to use on our projects with Free Geek Penn.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/david_harding_mythtv_sfd_2009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/david_harding_mythtv_sfd_2009_sm.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><center><small>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/ahotw.com\/\">Andrew Keyes<\/a> for this photo<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The presentation of the day was given by <a href=\"http:\/\/dtrt.org\/\">David Harding<\/a>. He came to speak on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mythtv.org\/\">MythTV<\/a> and did an excellent job comparing Myth to other consumer products, reviewing the basics and discussing the options available to folks looking to build a MythTV server.  During the presentation the question of controlling the MythTV front end via iPhones, turns out there is an app for both the iPhone and G1 <a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/g1_iphone_mythremotes.jpg\">as we demonstrate here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/table_sfd_2009_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/table_sfd_2009_1_sm.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Following the presentation we set up in the back of the room and were made available for questions about free software from everyone in the audience.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/table_sfd_2009_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/princessleia.com\/images\/journalpics\/092009\/table_sfd_2009_2_sm.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>We ended up giving pamphlets about Ubuntu Pennsylvania itself (I printed these out on cardstock, worked very well!), papers with our upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/PennsylvaniaTeam\/EventsTeam\/PhillyMythJam2009\">MythTV Jam<\/a> information, Ubuntu CDs, copies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theopendisc.com\/\">The Open Disc<\/a> and of course we all spoke to folks about using Ubuntu and other free software.<\/p>\n<p>There were lots more photos of the event, ones I took are <a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.ubuntupennsylvania.org\/main.php?g2_itemId=764\">here<\/a> and more from Andrew Keyes are located <a href=\"http:\/\/ahotw.com\/gallery\/v\/linux\/2009-SFD\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Very fun event, thanks to everyone who made it a success!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the Ubuntu Pennsylvania Team hosted a Software Freedom Day event.
