Here is the California Highway Patrol summary in full : A driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling on I-580 Westbound, east of Five Canyons Parkway, in the #1 lane. A tow truck, carrying a sedan on the bed of the truck, was traveling in the #3 lane ahead of the Chevrolet. The driver of the Chevrolet made an unsafe lane change to the right, a violation of California Vehicle Code, from the #1 lane, across the #2 lane, and into the #3 lane. As a result, the front of the Chevrolet crashed into the rear of the tow truck. The impact caused the tow truck driver to lose control, as the tow truck careened to the left and crossed all lanes of I-580 westbound. The front of the tow truck crashed into the concrete wall of the center divider. The tow truck spun to the left, and the driver of the tow truck was ejected onto the roadway into the #2 lane. The rear end of the tow truck then crashed into the concrete wall, causing the sedan on the bed of the tow truck to come loose, become airborne and travel in a southwesterly direction, where it ultimately landed on live BART tracks. The tow truck continued (unoccupied) to the right, across all lanes, and crashed into the concrete wall on the right shoulder of I-580 Westbound. The driver of the Chevrolet drove to the right shoulder and remained on scene. The driver of the tow truck, who was not wearing his seatbelt, sustained moderate injuries from being ejected onto the roadway. At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck.
