Bel Canto – Agassiz

So it’s October 2nd. I went for a walk today with shorts and a t-shirt on and I came home sweating, sweating! in October! It is very sad. People keep saying that it usually starts getting cooler by now, and that the whole summer has been strangely hot… I hope they are right, I will probably live the rest of my life in this area and it’s just been too hot. It’s actually sorta odd too, you know how sometimes you can get so into a book that you start moderately losing touch with reality? Maybe not… but right now, in book 6 of the Wheel of Time series the whole “world” is going through this intense drought and prolonged summer… weird, feels like that’s what is going on here…

A friend of mine downloaded Redhat 8.0 and finally got it installed last night. Apparently it comes with a version of XMMS that won’t allow mp3s to play! (xmms is sorta like the linux version of winamp, looks similar, can even use the winamp skins) It totally sucks. Apparently there are already sites out there that can “hack” it to play mp3s, but the whole mp3 thing bugs me… owning a file format, bleh! I mean granted, ogg is very cool, and IF i was beginning my digital music library I’d definately create all ogg files… but as of now I have over 1500 mp3s! And of course most of them arent from cds I own, so unless I found a program to transfer them to ogg format (is that possible?) then I am stuck with
mp3s. Anyway, he also said that you HAVE to have a graphical login with RH 8.0 … which was really strange, maybe he just didn’t see the option for textual login… then again I wouldn’t put it past them %) Oh, so it’s 5 cds in all… apparently comes with OpenOffice too… which really made me realize I need to move AWAY from redhat.. honestly, I dont need all the crap that it comes with, I am quite happy with installing things myself, and with Debian apt-get makes life so easy! So I’ll keep running RH 7.2 for a couple months, but as soon as I get my new processor and motherboard I will begin the whole restructuring of my system %)

I’m so tired today and I’m not sure why, I cant really remember if I slept well last night or not… *shrugs* I bought some cherry coke instead of cherry pepsi today when I walked up to the shopping plaza near here to get lunch ’cause cherry coke has a higher caffine content, and I have even been munching on penguin mintys half the day and I still feel like I want to go to bed! Maybe it’s because I’ve been pretty unproductive this week so far… sorta bored so I want to sleep. Well today I think I am gonna work on a new section of my site (another new section!? yes)hopefully I will finish this one someday.. hehee… It’s a Wheel of Time section, since I am REALLY getting into these books… reading “The World Of Robert Jordan’s Wheel Of Time” has really sparked much more interest. I actually emailed a woman who does WoT art and requested to use some of her pictures on my page once I get it done..

Anyway, I guess that’s it for noew *wanders off*

Yup, I’m moving away from RHL too. Not only because there is starting to get bloat, but there are better non-Linux distros out there (Freebsd ).

Look at /etc/inittab. This is were you set your system run level. A run level of 5 starts you out in X. Set this in inittab:
    id:3:initdefault:

That will start you out in run level 3, which is multi-user, networking w/o X. Then you can do the normal startx that you are probably used to.

Note that this has worked in versions of Redhat that I’ve used back to 4.2. I haven’t ran 8.0 yet, so let me know if it works
